Academic Information

Performance Expectations and Academic Probation

Any student in Middle or High School who has failed two or more classes in any one semester will be notified in writing they are being placed on Academic Probation. A meeting will take place between the parents, student, Guidance Counselor and Principal to establish a plan for a more successful academic pursuit.

If a student on Academic Probation fails more than one class in the following semester, parents may be notified that the child is refused enrollment at Lincoln Lutheran for the next term.

Students who are verified as learning disabled and are receiving resource assistance will be granted a "special review" if they are in danger of being placed on refused enrollment status.

Students who are placed on "refused enrollment" status for the next term may re-apply for enrollment at a later date and be subject to all new-student enrollment procedures, including successful academic progress at another educational institution.

Curriculum Requirements

Increasing college requirements make it imperative that students give very close attention to their high school course selections. Meeting just the basic high school graduation requirements does not necessarily insure that a student will be accepted into every college. You should check with the Counselor and the college admissions officer to be certain that you are adequately prepared.

Prior to enrolling in summer school or any other program that offers credit outside of Lincoln Lutheran, the student needs to see the Guidance Counselor to ensure that the course will/can be accepted for credit. Seniors and qualifying underclassmen may take courses at Lincoln Public Schools or area colleges as long as these classes do not interfere with the student's Lincoln Lutheran schedule.

Transfer credits from other schools will be placed on the Lincoln Lutheran transcript using the current Lincoln Lutheran grading scale to calculate GPA and class rank. If you have questions about how a course will be recorded, please speak with the Counselor.

The responsibility for meeting all credit requirements is the student's. The Counselor will help wherever possible, but you must know where you stand at all times.

Incompletes

If a student receives an incomplete ("I"), the grade will change to an "F" if the incomplete is not made up by the end of the third week after the end of the quarter in which the "I" was received. Making up the work will be the student's responsibility, but teachers will be given a list of students to whom they have given incompletes so that they can assist the students in any way possible.

Mid-term Reports

Mid-term reports are mailed to parents or guardians at the midpoint of each quarter to indicate a student's improvement or needs for improvement. Students and parents are strongly encouraged to contact the teacher and discuss ways and means for improvement.

Quarter/Semester Grade Reports

Parents will receive a written grade report via mail. Semester grades are considered permanent to a student's record. Middle-School classes that are less than a full semester long will be recorded/stored at the conclusion of the class.

Watch-List

Beginning the 6th Monday of each semester, the guidance office will verify students performing below a level of 70% in any class. Parents will be notified via letter regarding current level of performance in any class below the 70% level. The Watch-List will be utilized by the Activities Director and Activities Sponsors to monitor student eligibility throughout each activity season.

Course Drop-Add Procedures

When a student registers for and enrolls in a class, they are making a commitment to become a productive member of that class. All course drop - add decisions must take place within the first 10 school days of a semester, and will include parental verification/permission. If a student wishes to drop a class after this 10-day period, the grade given will be a WF (Withdrawal-Failing). This grade would carry the same impact as the student receiving an F for a class. The only exceptions to this rule are: a) the drop is recommended by the classroom teacher because the student is unable to successfully complete the assigned work due to lack of ability in the subject matter; or b) the parent provides a documented medical reason why the student is unable to complete the class.

Grading Scale

92-100% A 4.0
83-91% B 3.0
74-82% C 2.0
65-73% D 1.0

Full-Time Student Classification

To be enrolled at LL, a student must be considered full-time* (enrolled in a credit-earning class 7 out of 8 periods). The 7 credit-earning course total can be reached by combining LL classes and coursework from other educational resources (with a minimum enrollment in 5 LL credit-earning classes per semester).

Underclassmen are not allowed to take a course off-campus unless they request permission establishing just cause for entering another school's program as a junior (due to prerequisites and/or class progression). Students are only allowed to take courses off-campus if Lincoln Lutheran cannot provide the course (or one of equivalence).

*A family may enroll their child at LL for up to 2 classes per semester. These students will not be eligible to graduate from LL unless they enroll full-time at LL their senior year, meeting current graduation requirements.

Alternative Schedule Privilege (ASP)

Eligible** seniors can apply to participate in an alternative schedule to leave campus during 1st, 5th or 8th period if they are not enrolled in a class during one of those periods. Seniors who do not chose to leave campus during alternative schedule are required to remain in the Commons, Media Center, or other area designated by the Administration. Students are asked to refrain from loitering in the halls, parking lot, or other areas during their privilege time.

A senior must be enrolled in a minimum of 5 credit-earning Lincoln Lutheran classes per semester. If a senior is taking class(es) for credit at an area high school or college, they can request permission from the Administration for one free period in addition to the number of classes they will take at an off-campus location. By participating in an Alternative Study Program, the senior would be allowed, and limited to, taking their ASP during a time of the day when the off-campus class(es) meets. Academic opportunities outside the limitations of this policy can be appealed to an Academic Appeals Committee.

Seniors may establish appropriate "open-lunch" rules as a class each fall, with approval from the Administration, before being allowed to leave the campus during their lunch period.

NOTE:
ASP will be suspended during special school-wide mandatory assemblies (speakers, events, or special Chapels) and students are expected to be in attendance, even if the period before or after the event is "alternatively scheduled." Any student taking class at another school during the time of the special assembly must make arrangements with the Administration regarding their obligations.

Loss of ASP will take place when a student:

  1. Skips a class or mandatory activity (1 week per violation)
  2. Has any failing grades on a watch list (see p. 5) or report card (until the grade is brought up to a passing level)
  3. Enters a behavior contract resulting from discipline concerns (length will depend on severity & extent of behavior problems)

**ASP eligibility is based on academic progress towards graduation and behavioral maturity and may be revoked at any time by the Administration.
