High School Boys Basketball

The Lincoln Lutheran Warriors began the 2006-2007 with the motto: Rising Expectations. Throughout the year, weekly focus words such as: commitment, perseverance, trust, desire and compete fueled the shared goal of rising expectations. The Warriors posted a final record of 11-10, the first above .500 in three years. With a core group of experienced players returning, things truly are on the rise for Lincoln Lutheran basketball.

The season was marked by several nail-biting games. Overtime wins over Lincoln Christian in the Centennial Conference tournament and over Wilber-Clatonia on the road ended in smiles. The second home game of the year brought No. 5 Syracuse to the Warrior Dome and ended the opposite. After two overtimes, the hopes of a victory fell as did a last second scoop shot. The 11 victories, including a season sweep of cross-town rival Lincoln Christian, gave LL the highest wildcard ranking in C-1 since it began and revealed a vast improvement from years prior. The Warriors averaged 4.1 more points per game and opponents scored 7.2 less per game compared to last year. Eight or more players made their way into the scoring column on 10 different occasions. Lutheran's balanced attack resulted in seven different players leading the team in scoring. While the losses were tough to handle, eight of the 10 came to teams ranked in the top 10 in their class at the time. After finishing the regular season 11-9, the Warriors earned the No. 2 seed of their sub-district. Flashbacks of buzzer-beaters rushed through fans' minds, however, as a half-court bank shot upended the upstart Warriors in an second-round loss to Milford. Several team and individual honors gave recognition to the team.

Each player on the team set a personal career high in scoring, led by junior Kevin Raguse's 25 points. Senior point guard Alex Deeter amassed over 10 assists in a game twice to lead the team (his 100 assists ranks second all-time for single-season assists), while junior Matt Justus recorded games of 18 rebounds and eight blocks. Three times the Warriors used a field goal to come-from-behind, including game winners by senior Tyler Metschke and Kyle Ziegler. Deeter was name to the All-Centennial First Team while Justus and Raguse were named to the Second and Third Team, respectively. Deeter and Justus were Academic All-State and All-State Honorable Mention in both the Lincoln Journal Star and Omaha World Herald. Junior Ryan Huck earned the Warrior Award, Justus was named Oustanding Defensive Player and Raguse was named Outstanding Offensive Player. Deeter was named Most Valuable Player.

The Warriors graduated Alex Deeter, Tyler Metschke and Pat Hybl, each giving their best to the program over the years. Among those listed above, Kyle Anderson, Aaron Hedlund, Jesse Heibel, Michael Tewes and Connor Shelton return to lead the Warriors as they continue to rise and play for the glory of God!
