PROGRAM SPIRITUALITY & SUCCESS: The Warrior football program
strives to serve Jesus Christ as a medium for Spiritual growth,
witness, and outreach. Annually, the team selects a Biblically based
theme for the season. The 2007 theme is “CARPE DIEM” based on Romans
12:11 & 12 “Don't burn out; keep yourselves fueled and aflame. Be
alert servants of the Master, cheerfully expectant. Don't quit in hard
times; pray all the harder. (The Message Bible). Using the season theme
as a basis, the senior players develop and lead chapels not only for
Lincoln Lutheran but also for the Lutheran elementary schools in the
city. Other Spiritually focused team activities include: beginning and
ending each team function with prayer; Thursday night devotions and
spaghetti social; Camp Luther servant event; and an annual team witness
poster.
The Lord has blessed the Warrior football program and individual
athletes with much ‘earthly’ success & recognition over the years:
5 playoff appearances in 11 years of varsity participation (’96, ’97,
’01, ’03, ’05), 1 district championship - '01, 1 undefeated regular
season - ‘97, 3 all-state athletes (Justin Lewallen - 2nd team super
state punter in ‘00 , Jon Ziegler - C1 all-state defensive back in ‘01,
& Nathan Hannemann - C1 all-state linebacker in '03), 1 Shrine Bowl
selection (Jon Ziegler - ’01), 49-42 program win/loss record. The
Lincoln Lutheran football program debuted in the fall of 1995. That
first squad of Trojans (the mascot name at that time) was comprised of
18 total freshmen and sophomores and played four 8-man junior varsity
games. The team won its inaugural game over Omaha Brownell-Talbot and
finished with a 2-2 season record.
The next two seasons (’96 & ’97) the team played VARSITY 8-man
qualifying for the post-season both seasons. NOTE: The ’97 team was the
first to include seniors – that squad completed a perfect 7-0 regular
season!
The program moved up to C2 11-man in 1998 and then to C1 in 1999. In
1999 the program also joined the powerful Centennial Conference. Both
seasons included exciting homecoming victories. In 1998 the team won a
6-0 decision over Scribner-Snyder in a very cold, wet & muddy game
played on Lincoln High’s Beechner Field. The 1999 homecoming game was
played on Concordia University's Field versus then top ten ranked David
City Aquinas. The Aquinas game included what was arguably the most
magical moment in the program’s history -- the Warriors drove the
length of the field in the last 2 1/2 minutes of the game and scored
with less than 20 seconds remaining on the clock. A successful fake
P.A.T. two point conversion gave the Warriors a ONE POINT victory. This
was especially satisfying as Aquinas had defeated the Warriors by more
than 60 points the previous season.
The 2000 team recorded a 7-2 season record narrowly missing the
playoffs. Earmarking the 2000 season was an incredible 4th quarter
comeback victory over Bishop Neuman (NOTE: this was Neuman's only
regular season defeat on its way to a top 5 final ranking in C1). The
2000 team also engineered a late 4th quarter comeback victory over
Falls City High School in the last game of the season.
Like the team of 2000, the 2001 team earned a 7-2 regular season
win/loss mark. Furthermore, the 2001 team won the C1 District 1
championship and was the first Lincoln Lutheran team to qualify for the
playoffs in 11-man football. The 2001 playoff game was verses eventual
state runner-up Pierce.
Following a 3-5 mark in 2002, the 2003 team posted a 6-2 regular season
record, qualified for the playoffs, and was the FIRST team in program
history to win a playoff game. They defeated Syracuse on the road by
the score of 16-6 after playing and defeating the same Syracuse team 6
days earlier in the regular season finale. The 2003 team also won the
inaugural “Spirit Sword” game versus Lincoln Christian.
The 2004 squad was arguably one of the most inspiring teams in Warrior
football history. After a very impressive 3-0 start, the ’04 team was
throttled with injuries and finished with an honorable 4-4 record. The
final game of the ’04 season was the highlight as the team rallied for
an electric 4th quarter comeback “Spirit Sword” victory over cross-town
rival Lincoln Christian. Incredibly, the Warriors scored two touchdowns
in the last 3 minutes of the contest to secure the 21-15 win.
Arguably, the 2005 team was one of the finest 11-man squads the program
has fielded to date and truly earned the respect of both opponents
& fans alike. The team posted a 6-2 regular season record (the two
losses were by a total of 3 points) and qualified for the playoffs. A
few of the many highlights of the ’05 season included: an extremely
satisfying 28-0 homecoming shutout of district foe Auburn, a dominating
42-14 “Spirit Sword” victory over Lincoln Christian, and the
establishment of the program’s first 1,000 yard rusher (Micah Sirek –
1305 yds.).
The 2007 squad aspires to improve upon the 2-6 mark of the 2006 team.
2007 Warrior football seniors are: Kyle Anderson, Cody Evasco, Luke
Gifford, Andrew Hamann, Jesse Heibel, Zach Homes, Matthew Justus, Ryan
Huck, Jared Metschke, Micah Pomerenke, Kevin Raguse & Brady Romans.
