Powerlifting
In the state of Nebraska powerlifting is a club sport in which both men
and women in grades 9-12 are eligible to participate. Though
technically a year round activity, the majority of competitions occur
during the winter and early spring. Much like wrestling, individual
athletes compete in weight classes. In competition athletes are allowed
three single repetition attempts on each of three exercises (squat,
bench press, & deadlift). In order to earn a score the lifter must
perform a successful legal lift in each of the three exercises. The
best single legal lift weight for each of the three exercises are then
added together to determine the score for the athlete and, henceforth,
the winners in each weight class.
In addition to the individual "powerlifting competition, powerlifting meets also include team competitions and individual "Big Bench" competition. Teams are made up of as many as 10 athletes who are designated before the competition begins. Categories of the team competition may include: boys, girls, and/or co-ed. Lifters earn points for his/her team based on performance placing within his/her weight class (ie. 1st place in one's weight class = 7 team points; 2nd place = 5 points, etc.). Co-ed teams are comprised of boys and girls with at least 3 individuals of a single gender represented. The "Big Bench" competition is simply an additional area of competition in which athletes may compete for a prize. Winners in each wt. class are determined by the top single repetition bench press performances excuted during the regular powerlifting competition. "Big Bench" results have no effect on the team results. Over the years the Warrior powerlifting team has been blessed with great success and is well respected throughout the state of Nebraska. Especially noteworthy team successes include: 1997 Girls - Class D State Runner-Up; 2000 Boys - Class C State Runner-Up, 2001 Girls - Class C State Champions, 2005 Girls - Class C Third Place. Furthermore, many Warriors have placed at the state meet over the years. Noteworthy: Brittni Kallemeyn (2004 graduate) was a four-time state champion and placed at the national meet.
