In the Sub-District final against Milford on Thursday night foul trouble seemed to control the game as Milford shot 25 free throws and the Lady Warriors shot 11 during the game. Kayla Asche and Rachel Royuk picked up their third foul in the 2nd quarter but the Lady Warriors were able to go into halftime with the game tied 18-18. The 3rd quarter added more fouls as Kayla and Rachel picked up number four and Emily Metschke joined them with her 4th foul. The Lady Warriors extended their basketball season by winning the 1st round of the C1-5 Sub District Tuesday night by beating David City 35-51. The Lady Warriors took control from the opening tip and opened up a 11 point lead at the end of the 1st quarter and a 17 point lead at halftime. But David City was not willing to quit and turned up the defense to help create some turnovers and narrow the lead to 9 points by the end of the 3rd quarter. Early foul trouble caused a lot of rotation in the line up with Lydia Pomerenke fouling out in the 4th quarter and others playing with 3 and 4 fouls. The Lady Warriors hit some key free throws and some key baskets to help extend the lead back to the 16 point win. Rachel Royuk lead the scoring with 19 points, which included 3 first half baskets behind the three point line, and Emily Metschke pulled down 15 rebounds to help control the boards in the win. Rachel Royuk shot well for the evening and lead the scoring with 21 points. Her two three point shots in the 1st quarter helped keep the team within one point at the end of the 1st quarter. Down 8 points at half and 14 points at the end of the 3rd quarter the Lady Warriors could not find enough scoring to match Scotus and took a 14 point loss 53-39. Foul trouble eliminated Emily Metschke and Nora Pomerenke in the 4th quarter. The Lady Warriors play their last home game of the season Friday night against Fairbury.
Once Hastings St. Cecilia got the lead on their home floor they used the long range bomb to keep the cushion for the win. After playing number one ranked and undefeated Bishop Neumann last Friday night the Lady Warriors had to travel to Wahoo to play them again in the Centennial Conference Tournament Tuesday night. Too many turnovers from the Neumann pressure defense and too many fast break layups allowed were the keys to the loss to Neumann 67-25. You have to bring your "A" game when you take on Bishop Neumann and everyone has to play with intensity the entire game. Rachel Royuk lead the Lady Warriors in scoring with 15 points.
The Lady Warriors won their first Centennial Conference game Monday night by beating St Albert 40-49 at the Lutheran gym. The Lady Warriors lead by only 4 points at the end of the 1st quarter but were able to extend the lead to 13 points at halftime and 17 points by the end of the 3rd quarter. When playing the undeafeated number one ranked team in Class C-1 everything has to be perfect to pull off the upset. The Lady Warriors basketball team played with intensity but could not match the strength of Bishop Neumann and lost 65-31 Friday night in Wahoo. By the 2nd quarter the home court advantage started showing up for Neumann as Taylor Kathe and Emily Metschke each picked up their third foul with Neumann leading by half time 34-12. Even the players coming off the bench showed they wanted to play tough basketball against Neumann. Senior captain Lydia Pomerenke lead the scoring for the Lady Warriors with 10 points. After not playing a game for 15 days the Lady Warriors were able to shake off the dust and hit the shots when needed to beat a determined Wilber-Clatonia team 44-52 at the Lincoln Lutheran gym Friday night. Even though Wilber-Clatonia was missing some players due to sickness and injury the game was very physical and hard fought by both teams. Foul trouble was a concern for the Lady Warriors in the 3rd quarter as Lydia Pomerenke picked up her 4th foul and Emily Metschke picked up her 3rd foul trying to stop the 6 foot center from Wilber-Clatonia. Rachel Royuk lead the scoring with 17 points which included two three point baskets while Kelly Sanchez followed with 12 points while hitting 3 of the long range shots. The Lady Warriors finished with 7 three point baskets in the game.
For only the second time in the history of the Lincoln Lutheran Holiday Tournament the Lady Warriors were able to win the championship game by beating Fairbury 41-43 in a hard fought, down to the wire battle. After leading the 1st quarter by 3 points and the 2nd quarter by 2 points, the Lady Warriors fell behind at the end of the 3rd quarter by 7 points. With Rachel Royuk, Emily Metschke and Erin Heiden having 4 fouls in the 4th quarter, cautious defense was not an option as the Lady Warriors needed to get the ball and score. Kelly Sanchez and Taylor Kathe both hit three point shots to help bring the gap close and free throws by both teams and turnovers were adding to the pressure. With the game tied 41-41 the Lady Warriors had the last possession and with 3 seconds left on the clock Kelly Sanchez hit a driving layup from the left side of the floor to give the win to Lincoln Lutheran. Kelly led the scoring with 18 points and senior captain Lydia Pomerenke added 13 points. A much needed rest is welcomed as the team does not play until Friday Jan. 8th at home against top ten ranked Concordia.
