Through a Reading/Writing Workshop, students explore various genres in reading and writing, focusing on Figurative Language, Literary Elements, and the Traits of Writing. Through various lessons, worksheets and projects, the students will be able to identify and understand Figurative Language, Literary Elements, and the Parts of Speech. Eighth grade will focus on expanding word choice and vocabulary through new words banks and warm ups. Eighth grade units will include the following topics: Place consciousness: establishing oneself as a reader and writer; Communities and Developing a Support Group; Self Worth and Identity; and Epic Journey of the Student. Whole class novels include The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle, and The Horse and His Boy by C.S. Lewis.
