Lady Warriors District Soccer

The Lincoln Lutheran girls soccer team certainly ended the season with a fight. The ladies matched up with Pius X after beating Nebraska City 10-0 in the first round of districts.

The ladies came out strong and ready to defeat Pius, holding them 0-0 in the first half. The Warriors had plenty of great scoring opportunities along with a few great saves by goalie, freshman Tara Zieglebein and the defenders. Senior Kamilla Knudsen and Junior Kelly Sanchez did a excellent job up on top, making nice fast-breaks and combinations up the field. The girls played smart and competed exceptionally well with each other.

Overall the first half was played well and posed a big challenge to Pius. The second half the Warriors came out strong, but Pius came out ready to fight for the ball, literally. It was a rough game for the girls, as is evident by the bruises and lacerations the Warriors received, but not accompanied by appropriate calls from the referees. The Thunderbolts put up three goals by the end of the game as well as striking our starting keeper, Tara. Junior Sara Mach went in to finish the last 10 minutes as keeper. The Warriors competed with heart and sportsmanship, but unfortunately the better team does not always come out ahead on the scoreboard.

The Lady Warriors know the way we play is more important than the outcome, though it certainly hurts to lose. The Pius girls soccer team has always been undefeated to the Warriors, but I believe that it will not stay that way for long. The seniors will truly miss this year’s team. The program will lose many solid seniors and starters for the coming season. But they are still have an excellent group of freshmen from this season and returners.
