Reading Challenge Accepted!

Over the course of the year, Miss Kelly’s Eighth Grade English class received an Independent Reading Challenge of reading 30 books each this school year!

Besides their three whole-class books, that meant they would need to finish around seven to eight books a quarter. This challenge seemed insurmountable on the first day of school when they entered the classroom. However, the 52 eighth graders in Miss Kelly’s class have read a total of 211 books in the short span of about three months!

These books ranged from Fantasy, like Percy Jackson Series by Rick Riordan, to Nonfiction books about the creators of Superman, like Boy of Steel by Marc Tyler Nobleman.  The hottest book series in eighth grade remains the Divergent trilogy, by Veronica Roth, leading to frequent debates about the final chapters of the third book, Allegiant.

Another classroom favorite is the current whole-group book, Wonder by RJ Palacio, about a kid who goes to middle school for the first time.  The book helps us grapple with difficult questions about appearance, friendship and popularity, values, actions, and analyzing how we fit into this society God has given us. Miss Kelly’s class recommends Wonder if you would like a book that will make you laugh and cry and laugh again.
