2014 Distinguished Alumni Award

  John Sunderman

A current resident of Omaha, NE and 1975 graduate of Lincoln Lutheran Junior High, John went on to attend Lincoln Southeast High School and Valparaiso University.  John is currently the President of Owen Industries, Inc. in Omaha, NE. Owen Industries is a multi-division company that provides products and services to several industries including the manufacture of proprietary industrial machinery, fabrication of nuclear compliant material for the construction industry, and general steel processing.

John is the son of Otis and the late Florence Sunderman. He has been active in the greater Omaha area as a board member for multiple foundations and also by serving as a founding member of a 10K Literacy Run.

John stated his education at Lincoln Lutheran helped prepare him for life in the following ways: “The small class sizes allowed participation in several extra-curricular activities which students from larger schools miss out on.  Lincoln Lutheran had good teachers and strong academics.”

When asked what some of his favorite memories from Lincoln Lutheran were, John shared: “I have great memories of science class and band.  I also remember beating Pius X in basketball in 9th grade.”

When asked what advice he would share with current Lincoln Lutheran students, John replied:  “Always acknowledge a fault, this will throw those in authority off guard and give you the opportunity to commit more.”  -Mark Twain

John and his wife Jodi make their home in Omaha, where they both enjoy spending time with their daughter Jaeli.  John enjoys reading history and fiction.  He is also an avid mountaineer and has traveled to 5 continents for assorted hiking and mountain treks.
