Warriors Family Call to Action Advances

A few months ago, we told you about LB 670. This bill titled the “Opportunity Scholarships Act” would create a 100% state income tax credit for donations to scholarship granting organizations. The state would provide $10 million in total income tax credits, with the amount of the tax credits available increasing every year if 95% of the income tax credit cap is reached. Please see the attached press release as the bill advances from committee.

This bill differs from previous bills that were labeled as “voucher plans” as these tax credits rely on tax-incentivized private donations, rather than government appropriations. This type of “scholarship plans” are currently working in 18 states, and based on national surveys have been the most supported and least opposed education choice policy in the country.

If LB 670 were to pass, the impact on the Lincoln Lutheran community could be profound, incentivizing donors to provide more scholarship money for our students, opening up the option of Lutheran education to an even broader base as well as helping to alleviate the financial burdens of our current Warrior Families. Please see the attached documents for specific examples of the success of these type of programs in states like Iowa and across the U.S.

How can you support LB 670? There are a few ways. We would strongly encourage you to send an email to your State Senator, urging them to advance LB670 the Opportunity Scholarship Act. If you would like a “sample” email with the wording you can use, please see the attached “Sample Letter” document. It includes a web address where you can look up the name of your State Representative if you don’t know.

If you would like to take a more proactive approach, you can testify at the committee hearing. That hearing will take place on Thursday, March 7th at the Capitol beginning at 1:30 pm. There will be a lunch beforehand in Sen. Lenhan’s office at 12:30 pm. If you are interested in testifying, please take a look at the attached “Tips for Testifying” and contact Lauren Carcia at lgarcia@necatholic.org who is organizing those who wish to testify.
